Contextomy

The term contextomy comes from a journalist working against early Nazism. The German newspaper Der Sturmer (The Stormer) in the 1920s and 30s, would regularly use half quotes and decontextualized content from Jewish texts to promote anti-semitic sentiment.

The term “quote mining” comes from scientists working against creationism in the 90s. Creationists regularly look through scientific writings to “mine for quotations” that they can twist and manipulate for the purpose of justifying creationism with scientific jargon.
