This is a list of some handy books to help foster healthy skepticism and develop deeper critical thinking skills.

Beginner Level

-“Post Truth” by Lee McIntyre is super short and easy. You can read it in a couple hours. Very helpful for understanding how science denial is artificially created to promote special interests.

-“Propaganda” by Edward Bernays…Bernays was a literal propagandist throughout the 20th century and one who spent his life developing his craft into a professional field. He writes about what propaganda is and how he manipulates and directs public perceptions.

-“Weaponized Lies” by Daniel Levitin breakdowns everything from misleading statistics, to how to identify expertise, to how science works, to logical fallacies….

-“Undeniable” by Bill Nye was written following his encounters with young earth creationists. Nye discusses how scientific consensus works, how evidence works, and lays out what evolution is and why it matters. Recommended for anyone who may not have been exposed to scientific thinking in their upbringing. It makes an excellent springboard into the world of scientific literacy.

-“Demon Haunted World” by Carl Sagan is one of the best books ever on critical thinking and skepticism. I personally believe it should be required reading for life. Carl Sagan is essentially the father of the field of scientific communication. His communication skills make complex sciences easy to understand for general audiences.

-“Skeptic” by Michael Shermer is a collection of scientific literacy columns he wrote for a newspaper. Each section is super short, and easy, covering every hoax and science conspiracy theory one can think of.
